Program Description:

The Welding Technology program prepares students for employment in the Welding industry as plate and/or pipe welders. Certification is encouraged and performed in accordance with American Welding Society and D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Code. The program includes a wide variety of welding experiences for plate and pipe welders.  The Welding Technology program is approved by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) under the sponsorship of the Alabama Department of Education, as an Accredited Training and Education Facility (ATEF).  In addition, the Wallace and Sparks Campus sites have been designated by the American Welding Society as Accredited Testing Facilities.

 

Career Opportunities:

Graduates of the Welding Technology program may become employed as a welder, cutter or welding machine operator. Welders with additional training and experience may become employed as a welding technician, welding supervisor/inspector or a welding instructor. According to the U.S. Department of Labor 2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2 out of 3 Welders are employed in manufacturing industries. 
 

Skills Needed:

Successful Welders possess good manual dexterity, eyesight and hand-eye coordination. Welding often requires working in awkward positions and the ability to concentrate on detailed work for extended periods of time.
